Story

The 1904 Oldsmobile Runabout helped define the future of the automobile by bringing true mass production to the industry. Known as the Curved Dash Oldsmobile, this iconic vehicle became the first high volume mass produced car, making personal transportation more accessible than ever before.

The Runabout seats two passengers and originally sold for just $650, making it one of the most affordable cars on the market at the time. Its lightweight design, at just 850 pounds, combined with durable Concord springs, delivered a practical and reliable driving experience.

Power comes from a centrally mounted, water cooled single cylinder engine that produces 4 horsepower. The engine uses a brass gravity feed carburetor and connects to a semi automatic transmission with two forward speeds and one reverse. The planetary gear system allows for smooth low speed operation and simple control, making the 1904 Oldsmobile Runabout easy to drive for early motorists.

This historic 1904 Oldsmobile Runabout has also proven its endurance and legacy by participating in the prestigious London to Brighton Run multiple times, showcasing the lasting impact of one of America’s earliest and most influential automobiles.
