Our 1905 Columbia Mark XXXV Open Drive Brougham took second in the Early Electric Class at the 2021 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach on Sunday, August 15.  The events leading up to the main event included a 70 mile tour where the Columbia crossed the starting line, passed in front of the Lodge and while the other cars turned right to head to the highway, we made a slight left to venture around a bit before making our way back to the truck lot.  With a unconfirmed range of 30-35 miles, we didn’t want to take the chance of not having a spot to “recharge”.  It is also believed that the range is based on a flat terrain and not the peaks and valleys of the famed 17 Mile Drive.  This elegant coach sports a lofty chauffeur’s position high atop the front carriage wheels and a fully enclosed four-passenger compartment.  Unlike similar electrics that used a single motor to drive a shaft or chain to the rear axle, the Mark XXXV features an unusual dual-motor layout, with the two huge electric motors directly driving ring gears affixed to the inside of each rear wheel.  The car also boosts it’s original interior, electric motors, chassis, and body which had received a light restoration in the late 1980s.

This beautiful example will make it’s way from California to the collection in the next week or so and will be on display for all to see and enjoy.
