Story

The story of the 1912 International Harvester Highwheeler begins with a problem that early motorists knew all too well: mud.

In the early 1900s, paved roads were extremely rare. Most routes were little more than dirt paths that turned into deep ruts and thick mud during the spring and fall. Automobiles built with low bodies and small wheels often struggled to travel these roads. As a result, manufacturers developed a new type of vehicle designed specifically to handle these harsh conditions. The answer was the highwheeler.

The 1912 International Harvester Highwheeler took inspiration from horse drawn wagons that had long traveled the same muddy roads. Instead of small automobile wheels, it used enormous wagon style wheels that lifted the vehicle high above the ground.

International Harvester Company applied its farming and equipment experience to the design of this practical light truck. The vehicle weighed only about 2,155 pounds, which kept it relatively light and easier to maneuver on rough roads.

However, the most striking feature was its towering wheels. The front wheels measured an impressive 40 inches in diameter while the rear wheels stretched even larger at 44 inches. This design created nearly a foot and a half of ground clearance beneath the vehicle.

Because of this height, the 1912 International Harvester Highwheeler could travel through deep mud and uneven terrain without becoming high centered. While many early automobiles struggled in poor road conditions, highwheelers continued moving forward.

Vehicles like this helped bridge the gap between the horse drawn wagon era and the modern automobile. They allowed farmers, workers, and rural communities to travel roads that ordinary cars simply could not handle.

Today, the 1912 International Harvester Highwheeler tells the story of early American roads and the practical engineering that helped drivers conquer them.
