History

Author Ian Fleming, best known for creating James Bond, first dreamed up Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as a children’s story for his son. He wove the adventures of a flying car into a tale of daring escapes and unforgettable characters. When producer Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli brought the story to the big screen, he needed a car as extraordinary as the adventure itself.

Filmmakers built several versions of Chitty for the movie, some to drive, some to “fly,” and others for special effects. The hero car, used for driving scenes, featured an aluminum body styled like a vintage 1920s race car with brass fittings, boat-like fenders, and, of course, those unforgettable wings. With its theatrical flair and whimsical design, Chitty didn’t just support the story, it stole the spotlight, becoming as much a star as Dick Van Dyke himself.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang represents more than just a car. It embodies imagination, adventure, and the pure joy of storytelling. Its place in film history and pop culture continues to inspire new generations. At Stahls, we proudly share this rare treasure with our guests, offering a one-of-a-kind chance to stand face-to-face with true movie magic.
